🪴 New Scripture Garden - Holy Spirit 🪴

I wrote on May 2nd, about 1 Kings 19:9, 13. The verses where God asks Elijah the same question twice. “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

I had to SIT with the same question that God asked Elijah to discover Holy Spirit was there, speaking to me through His Word. That first act of sitting caused a chain (or should I say chair) reaction.

The first act of sitting required me to slow down and be quiet and practice patient listening. After this, I saw benches every time I visited a garden or a park. The more I practiced sitting down in my home, garden, or part, the more I wanted to include others.

When I think of the Holy Spirit, I think of getting quiet enough to listen so He can help me listen for what God is doing. Maybe that’s why it took many years for me to pay attention.

🪴 New Scripture Garden - God is My Refuge 🪴

I planted Zechariah 9:12 in 2016 when Marc and I lived in Houston. It says, “Return to your stronghold, O prisoners of hope; today I declare that I will restore to you double.”

We felt trapped in an apartment with rats & cockroaches. Marc felt trapped in a job that promised one thing and delivered another. I felt trapped after a miscarriage.

I needed to learn how to be weak and weary without judging myself, and I learned how to refresh myself in the Lord (see 2 Samuel 16:14).

I became a prisoner of hope.
God became My Refuge.

Although my circumstances remained the same, I found joy in the deep reassurance that God is in control. I gave myself permission to seek out what made my soul come alive—wandering through Houston’s art, culture, food, and gardens—even discovering beauty in new gardens across the globe.

At the end of the year, I found a sign that said, “We made it!”

It’s true. I made it through one of the hardest years of my life with God as My Refuge. What about you, what Name or Attribute of God has gotten you through impossible circumstances?

I planted 1 Peter 5:10 in my Scripture Garden bed, My Healer, because that is the verse God gave me in 1998 when I needed healing.

It says, “In his kindness God called you to share in his eternal glory by means of Christ Jesus. So after you have suffered a little while, he will restore, support, and strengthen you, and he will place you on a firm foundation.”

I had lost the skin off my face and feet. I had no hope. I had gained 100 pounds from the prednisone to treat my eczema. Something about reading that verse made me realize God was speaking to me.

God has healed me, just not when I expected to be a “little while.”

The picture I took of an empty pot at the Missouri Botanical Garden in 2019, which said, “Bed Renovation in Progress,” spoke to my soul.

I’m STILL trusting in God for my health. There are many days when I live by the mantra, it’s okay to not be okay.

I STILL have eczema, but God has helped me learn how to control it so it doesn’t take years, even a decade of my life.
I STILL take medication for my anxiety. I believe God uses all things to heal, and this is one of them.

I don’t know what aspect of God you’re struggling with, but if my life can be of encouragement to you. God is My Healer, and He can be yours, too. Don’t let your health struggles drive you further AWAY from God but CLOSER to Him.

I was literally going to close this account and focus on my photography at @reneefisherphotography. I’m not writing anything right now and there doesn’t seem to be any new opportunities at the moment.
THAT NIGHT, I had a dream about my mentor, @lovewise62, asking her if I could have a double portion of her ministry (like Elisha asking Elijah) and He reminded me that I prayed that prayer to see Him. Then, in the dream, God began to reopen doors in traditional publishing that were all previously closed, including helping @zondervan with another Bible.

WOW!

I’ve been sitting with that dream now for a week. I thought I’d share another Scripture Garden verse while I wait to see if that dream really was from God. It’s a verse from Jeremiah 9:23-24.

Thus says the Lord: “Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the Lord.” Jeremiah 9:23-24

If there’s one thing I know, it’s God. I used to want His blessings more than Him. And now that He has blessed me with all the things He promised me,

I.
Still.
Want.
Him.

I now understand that it is He who opens and closes doors.

I’m at a point in my career, life, and motherhood where I am content. Whether I’m writing or not. Taking pictures or not. Staying home with my daughter or not.

I wasn’t always content, and for that I am grateful.

I couldn’t decide on a picture to pair the verse with, so I chose these two that I took from @npbgs in North Dakota, and my favorite flower, the purple coneflower or echinacea, taken at @augustana_illinois.
