I am so excited to change the negative stereotype of self-publishing one book at a time.
As I shared before, the good news is that self-publishing is no longer taboo! Your chances of getting traditionally published are even higher now if your self-published book sells well!
I hope the #JustStart Writing Your Book series will encourage you to #JustStart writing your book today. Not yesterday. Not tomorrow.
Just start writing today!
Next up in the #JustStart Writing Your Book guest post series is my client, Maria Durso. She is the first client to self-publish with me!
Growing up, did you always dream of writing a book?
I never thought of writing a book when I was growing up. I didn’t think I had anything to say.
How much time passed (days, months, or years) was it from the time you knew you wanted to write a book to when you actually started writing your book?
I felt prompted by the Holy Spirit to write a book, but two years passed. One day Charisma came to my church and said they felt I should write a book. I always said that if God wanted me to write a book He would send the publisher to me.
They came right to my door!
After writing my testimony out, Charisma got back to me and said they wanted me to write a book entitled Satans Trap for Women instead.
I wasn’t feeling it.
I didn’t hear from them for almost a year. One Sunday while sitting in church, I got a clear vision for the book. I said to my friend,
“If this is God, Charisma will call me.”
They did! They seemed to love the project.
What were some obstacles you had to overcome to #juststart writing your book? How did you overcome?
I am a procrastinator by nature. I have a lot of fears of being judged and didn’t want my life out there for all to read. Needless to say, about six more months passed–and I still had nothing.
One night I had a dream. In it, I was giving every excuse not to write the book. It seemed every time I sat down to write, it just didn’t come out right. I didn’t think I had it in me. When I got up that morning, my quiet husband told me to sit down. He wanted to speak to me. He told me,
“I know you are trying to get out of writing the book, but right after breakfast, you are to go right upstairs to your office and sit down and start writing.”
Then He prayed for me.
When I sat down to write, I said,
“Lord I’ve been asking you to provide a ghost writer to help me.”
The Holy Spirit answered,
“You don’t need a ghostwriter, you have The Holy Ghost writer”.
That day I sat down and everything just flowed. I even wrote the book on my iPad! I don’t even own a computer.
You are not the only woman who dreams of publishing her own book. What would you say to that woman today? Would you give her advice? Encourage her? Pray for her? What does she need to know to #juststart writing?
Truthfully I could have never dreamed any of this. This was God’s plan and if God doesn’t give the dream then I dare not plan my own steps. Joseph had a God-given dream, so did Daniel. Everything was initiated by God. We who are believers are inspired and led by the leading of the Holy Spirit.
I would also say if you have a God-given dream then allow Him to lead you and guide you every step of the way. He who started this good work will bring it to completion (Romans 8:28)!
Was there one or two people that helped you finish writing your book? Who were they and what kind of support did you receive from them?
My friend Marie Armenia who writes for Christian magazines, and who also wrote a book of her own. She tirelessly read through every chapter. She really encouraged me. My assistant Penny also helped me reminding me of certain incidents and helping me with my sentence scripture.
The week my book was to be published, I got an email from Charisma House Publishers that said they were not going through with the project. They felt there was low interest in the subject matter. Miraculously they allowed me to keep the advance, which I had never cashed. They even gave me full rights to the book which they had edited. I already had dates to minister with the book. At that time I was introduced to Renee Fisher. She saved my life! She helped me self-publish and I never missed a beat. Meeting her was God ordained.
Now that your book is out, what is your heart for this book? i.e. Tell us why we should buy it?
My heart for this book is for it to get down in the deepest crevices of the cracks in the foundation of our hearts and allow the Holy Spirit to heal and seal every broken place.
I believe everyone should buy this book because deep down inside most of us struggle with being unconditionally loved by a perfect and holy God. Most of us have flawed thinking and deep complexes. From Your Head to Your Heart ministers straight to the root of our struggles. It is honest and raw and says things that most will not admit to or those who don’t understand why they struggle trusting God. So many books tell us to “climb the mountain.” My book tells you how to get there by dealing with the issues that keep us on the bottom or that keep us sliding backward once we have the courage to take a giant climb.
How can we pray for you?
You can pray for me to stop procrastinating from writing the new book the Holy Spirit placed in my heart to write. I need to sit down and do it. I’m almost ten months overdue! I have it in my head and my heart, but I must get it down on paper.
